Abstract

In this chapter, I want to discuss some of the special problems that can occur in the lives of doctors and their spouses. The focus here will be on those problems that, for the most part, are external to the marriage yet are so upsetting that they do affect marital functioning and happiness. Further, these are problems that are not predictable; they can happen to anyone. They may beset couples with no intrinsic marital discord or couples who are already on shaky ground before the added stress occurs. Needless to say, the couple’s ability to cope with special problems is predicated upon the resting state of their marriage before the change, their prior experience in dealing with adversity, and the magnitude of the stress.
