Megakaryocyte Maturation and Platelet Release in Normal and Pathologic Conditions
Chapter
Abstract
By examination of histological preparations, Wright (1906) was the first to suggest that platelets originate from fragmentation of the cytoplasm of bone marrow megakaryocytes. These cells can be differentiated from other bone marrow cells by their large size, which is related to the process of endomitosis leading to a polyploid nucleus (Levine et al., 1982).
