Abstract
It has been more than 50 years since Leo Kanner wrote the initial paper describing autism. In the early years immediately following his publication, progress was slow because the then popular psychodynamic model put the focus on the parents, rather than the children. As the biological determinants of autism became better understood and more widely accepted in the 1970s and 1980s, progress has accelerated dramatically. Our current understanding of autism is much better and increases daily. Prospects for the future seem bright.
