Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Optical Fibers with Distributed Gain

  • Mário F. Ferreira

Abstract

Recent experimental and theoretical studies have shown the desirability and feasibility of constructing distributed fiber amplifiers (achievable in optical fibers lightly doped with rare-earth ions) of as many as tens of kilometers in length for use in fiber communication links1. In this context, it is important to study the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers in the presence of distributed gain. In fact, we can easily admit that even a weak narrow-band signal (pump) will determine the appearance of an intense amplified Stokes wave, which, besides to deplete the pump, will affect strongly the optical source2. Furthermore, the appearance of higher Stokes orders will become also readily observable.
