Joint Contact Pressures within the Normal Wrist: Experimental Versus Analytical Studies
Abstract
The forces applied to the wrist joint are mainly the result of those externally applied, and of those exerted by the wrist and fingers flexor and extensor muscle-tendon units. The transmission of these forces through the 8 carpal bones to the radius and ulna is difficult to assess, due to the complexity [1] of the geometry of the carpus, which constantly changes with position and function, [2] of the mechanical properties of the cartilage of the various joints and of the triangular fibrocartilage (TFC), and [3] of the disposition of the numerous ligaments which spread the forces throughout the wrist articular complex. During the past years, there has been however a number of attempts to measure or to calculate the joint contact pressures within the wrist joints.
