Attitudes toward Elderly Sexuality
Chapter
Abstract
Our youth-oriented culture views the process of aging as a tragic, narcissistic injury instead of as an opportunity for personal growth and change. Unfortunately, many older adults internalize and generalize these negative attitudes toward their own sexuality, and diminish or cease sexual expression out of fear, disgust, and shame. The attitudes that clinicians hold toward elderly sexuality also can influence their patients’ attitudes toward elderly sexuality.
