The Epidemiology of Dementia in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease
Chapter
Abstract
Though in his 1817 monograph on the ‘Shaking Palsy’, James Parkinson believed in “the absence of any injury to the senses and to the intellect”, it is now widely accepted that dementia is often seen in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease.Prevalence estimates of cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease have ranged from under 10% to over 80%(Brown and Marsden, 1984), attesting to the variable methodologies employed and populations studied.
