Plasmapheresis and Cryopheresis
Abstract
Our studies on patients with essential mixed cryoglobulinemia (EMC) and glomerulonephritis strongly support the hypothesis that the circulating cryoglobulins play an important role in the pathogenesis of renal damage in EMC. In fact: a) deposits of IgM with anti-IgG factor activity were found both in the glomeruli and in the serum cryoprecipitate of the patients; b) IgM(k) anti-IgG/IgG was eluted from a kidney biopsy specimen of one such patient; c) after selective removal of circulating cryoglobulins by cryopheresis and immuno-suppressive therapy, marked improvement in the renal function and immunological activity of the disease occurred in all 5 patients so treated.
