The Definitive Diagnosis of Mycoplasma Infections

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is no longer the only mycoplasma recognized as a pathogen for humans. The emergence of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum as genitourinary tract pathogens in adults (1), as well as for the fetus in utero and the neonate (2), makes isolation of these organisms no longer a research exercise but an essential diagnostic laboratory test. It is for this reason that the methodology for isolation and identification of these organisms must be reviewed. Another area of major import has been the development of a reproducible antibiotic susceptibility test which has relevance to attainable serum levels of the different antibiotics. This is critical for instituting appropriate and effective therapy.
