Effective Interactions: Derivation of Moment Criteria

Abstract
Meaningful spectral calculations for a many particle system usually require severe truncation of the vector space and renormalization of the interaction to account for effects of truncation1. Traditional methods for imposing spectral criteria to find the effective Hamiltonian (indicated here by ĥ) have centered around the use of projection operators and linked-folded perturbation theory as, for example, in the Block-Horowitz-Brandow2 formulation. In most cases, the difficulties of calculating the significant third and higher order diagram contributions have made these approaches impractical.3
