Abstract
On irradiation of a solid target with a Neodymium laser it has been found that part of the incident radiation is backscattered with a frequency near the laser frequency, and to a smaller fraction with twice the laser frequency (second harmonic). Extensive experiments with various target materials give strong evidence for stimulated Brillouin backscattering of laser radiation and frequency conversion into the second harmonic due to the presence of a density gradient in the plasma.
