New Trends in the Pharmacology of Central Serotoninergic Receptors
Abstract
Since the discovery of serotonin (5-HT) in brain about thirty years ago, considerable progress has been made regarding the distribution of serotoninergic neurones, their electrophysiological and biochemical characteristics and their functional role in the control of sleep and wakefulness, thermoregulation, pituitary hormone release, transmission of nociceptive messages (see 1) etc. In addition, abnormal serotoninergic neurotransmission seems to be associated with some psychiatric disorders (notably depression) showing indirectly that 5-HT may well be involved in the control of basic behavioural reactions.
