Muscle Response to Internal Stimulation of the Peroneal Nerve in Paraplegic Patients
Chapter
Abstract
Man has been interested in electrical stimulation of living tissue for centuries. Only recently has he been able to apply this interest in a clinical manner. The possibility of controlled application of surface electrical stimulation to assist paralyzed extremities was first porposed by Basmajian in 1958 and applied by Liberson in 1961. Physicians and engineers in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia have refined this technique into a reliable tool for rehabilitation of hemiplegia. At Rancho Los Amigos Hospital the idea was further developed into an implantable electrical system which is powered by an external power source through a radio frequency link.
