Theory of Photodissociation and Predissociation Processes in Van der Waals Molecules
Chapter
Abstract
A Van der Waals molecule consists, by definition, of two or more stable molecules held together by weak interactions. The absorption spectra of these molecules in the infrared involves the excitation of the rotational and/or vibrational state of one of the stable molecules. The energy absorbed in such an excitation process normally far exceeds the binding energy of the weak Van der Waals bond which holds the complex together. The excited state created in this way therefore possesses more than enough energy to break up into its constituent stable atoms.
