Iodine Nutrition and Congenital Hypothyroidism

Research in Congenital Hypothyroidism

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 161))

Abstract

In Western countries with an adequate dietary supply of iodine the incidence of congenital hypothyroidism is 1/3000 to 1/4000 newborn infants (1). This frequency justifies systematic screening, which is extremely efficient and has an elevated benefit-cost ratio (2–3). In such countries CH is due principally to congenital anomalies in the development of the thyroid (4); it is unpredictable and unpreventable.
