The sulfatic process develops in rocks containing either sulfides or free sulfur. Attacked by oxygenated ground waters, these oxidize aria produce sulfuric acid:
$$\begin{gathered} FeS_2 + 7O + H_2 O \to FeSO_4 + H_2 SO_4 , \hfill \\ 2H_2 O + 2S + 3O_2 \to 2H_2 SO_4 . \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$
