Target Identification in a Natural Environment: A Statistical View of the Inverse Problem
Chapter
Abstract
In a natural environment, the sonar system of bats or dolphins has three main roles: detection, location and recognition (classification) of targets and obstacles. To get the information on their prey (identification and size estimation), the animals using a biological sonar are faced with solving an inverse sonar problem: starting with an echoe’s sequence, how to extract characteristic parameters that can be used for target identification.
