The Effect of Uric Acid on The Inhibitory Activity of Glycosaminoglycans and Urine

Abstract
One theory advanced to explain the apparent influence of urate on calcium oxalate (CaOx) stone formation proposes that the binding of colloidal urate to urinary glycosaminoglycans (GAGS) reduces their inhibitory potency and thereby indirectly increases the risk of CaOx stone formation in vivo1. In this study normal human urine, chondroitin sulphate and heparin were preincubated with uric acid to determine whether or not this altered their inhibitory effect on CaOx crystal growth and aggregation.
