Part of the Ettore Majorana International Science Series book series (EMISS, volume 40)

The knowledge that galaxies, then undifferentiated from galactic nebulae, had different forms preceded the era of astronomical photography. Now morphological types establish a fundamental descriptive vocabulary for the study of galaxies and galactic systems (Hubble 1936, de Vaucouleurs 1959, Sandage 1975).
