Enzymes in Acid-Base Reactions
Chapter
Abstract
The term “acid-base reaction” is taken here in the broadest sense; that is, it includes any reaction involving a heterolytic cleavage and/or formation of covalent bonds, without an apparent transfer of an odd number of electrons. This definition covers most of the enzymatic reactions other than oxidation-reduction reactions. Enzymes included in this category are the majority of transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases, and ligases (synthetases).
