Abstract
In 1978, on the first day of school desegregation in New Castle County, students confronted a challenge more profound than merely riding a school bus or adjusting to a strange, new school building. Most white students had to face for the first time the reality of living in a multiracial world. Few students of either race were prepared for the clash of cultures that would inevitably occur. Racial minority children, most of them poor and undereducated, had to confront the affluence and relatively advanced academic status of their new suburban classmates. White children, most of them middle-class, had to confront the impoverished environment surrounding inner-city schools. In addition, all students had to contend with the racial stereotypes fostered by our race-conscious society.
