Chromosome Engineering in Wheat Breeding and Its Implications for Molecular Genetic Engineering
Chapter
Abstract
During the last five years a revolution has taken place in molecular and cellular biology. This offers the prospect of manipulating and transferring genes from one organism into another to produce directed changes in the phenotype. It is not surprising that this explosion of interest in the methods of recombinant DNA has encouraged a further interest in adapting such techniques to the breeding of improved crop plants. Such activities are obviously worthwhile and may lead to dramatic changes in the age-old endeavor of plant breeding.
