Abstract
The Doppler effect has long been one of the principal problems in high resolution spectroscopy of atoms and molecules. Atoms moving towards an observer appear to emit or absorb light at shorter wavelengths than atoms at rest, and atoms moving away appear to emit at longer wavelengths. In a gas, with atoms moving at random in different directions, the lines appear blurred, and important details in line shape and structure are often obscured.
