Abstract

In numerous obstetrical and pediatric departments caring for healthy and sick newborns, continuous heart rate monitoring is used as an indirect reflection of oxygenation. This is based on the theory that a sudden fall in arterial Po2 or chronic hyp-oxaemia is reflected in a change in heart rate and thus, alert the physician to a possible hypoxaemic state.
