Outlines of the Stratigraphy and Tectonics of Turkey, with Notes on the Geology of Cyprus

  • Chapter
The Ocean Basins and Margins

Abstract

Turkey occupies an area of about 760,000 km2, and is divided by the Dardanelles-Marmara-Bosphorus depression into a small European part in the west (Turkish Thrace) and a larger Asiatic part to the east (Anatolia). Anatolia, which corresponds roughly to the peninsula of Asia Minor, is bounded by the Dardanelles-Bosphorus depression to the north, the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas on the west and southwest, Syria and Iraq lying to the southeast, and Iran and Russia to the east. Most of the geologically interesting features of the country lie in Anatolia, so this name is frequently used as a synonym for Turkey by geologists.
