Abstract
The doctor, the housewife, the barber, the factory worker, most of you who are reading this paper—the average driver—takes his automobile for granted. It starts, it stops, it requires gas—it furnishes transportation. You are aware that power is needed to make the car go, but you probably do not realize that power is also required to make the car stop. This power requirement can be surprisingly high. For example, to stop a 5000-lb automobile from 100 mph in 10 seconds requires the brakes to absorb about 300 horsepower. This is more horsepower than is available in the majority of engines in service today.
