Abstract

Among many side-effects following (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) treatment short-lasting aphrodisiac action has in some cases been found in male and female parkinsonian patients (Hyyppä et al. 1970, Calne and Sandler 1970, Jenkins and Groh 1970). Whether this phenomenon is directly due to the action of L-dopa treatment has not been confirmed exactly. However, plenty of neuroendocrino-logic data about the role of dopamine (DA), as well as of other monoamines in the hypothalamic regulatory function of gonadotrophic hormones (Fuxe and Hökfelt 1969, McCann 1970) make possible to understand the action of L-dopa on the sexual functions. Firstly, L-dopa might increase the content of DA in the regions which are important in mediating sexual behaviour and/or gonadotrophin secretion. Secondly, L-dopa treatment might act through the metabolism of other monoamines in those brain regions.
