Effects of Estrogen on Calcium Metabolism in Man

Abstract

Scientific interest in a relationship between gonadal steroids and bone mineral metabolism began when the rapid changes of bone structure that occur during egg-laying in the pigeon were recorded in 1934 (1). As the egg approaches maturity bone formation in the tibias and femurs becomes so intense that these bones become almost solid. This mass of bone is suddenly and rapidly resorbed as calcification of the shell begins. These changes were shown, by classic endocrine studies, to be secondary to cyclic changes in estrogen secretion (2). Similar observations in diverse species, such as chickens, mice, rats, and pocket gophers, showed that gonadal hormones have a variety of effects on bone, including stimulation and inhibition of both bone growth and resorption, as well as no effect.
