Farewell to Instantons

Abstract

At the present time the instanton is being used in QCD to explain color confinement, dynamical symmetry breaking with fermion mass generation, and to resolve the U(1)-problem (Callan et al., 1978; Carlitz and Creamer,1979). In my lecture I would like to show that for some technical reasons it is doubtful that the instanton accomplishes these feats and that it is even possibly irrelevant to the structure of QCD altogether.
