Immunobiology of Leprosy
Abstract
Leprosy continues to be one of the major unconquered diseases of the world as witnessed by the fact that the total number of cases probably exceeds 12 million (WHO, 1977). Furthermore, this infection produces some form of physical disability in more than 25% of cases (Bechelli and Mártinéz Dominquez, 1966). Until recently, the staggering medical, social, and economic consequences of leprosy have received insufficient attention from the governments and medical research communities of more affluent nations. Within the past decade, however, the need for a global attack on leprosy has become widely recognized and tangible progress has been made.
