Interpretation of the X-Ray Emission Spectra from FeAl, CoAl and NiAl

Abstract

The soft x-ray emission spectra (XES) of the intermetallic compounds FeAl, CoAl and NiAl have recently been measured by Goldstein et al (reported in this Volume page 635). In the case of FeAl a soft-XES lies in the energy range between 46 and 73 eV and consists of the Fe-M2,3 and Al-L2,3 spectra, which are sufficiently separated in energy to be investigated independently. Schwarz et al (1979) estimated the relative intensities of these XES and the interpretation was based on the results of augmented plane wave (APW) band structure calculations. The extension to CoAl and NiAl is complicated by the fact that the two types of spectra are superimposed (especially for NiAl). In NiAl an additional structure near the Fermi-energy is found experimentally, but on the basis of the APW calculation this structure is uncertain because of the crude k-grid.
