Abstract
Fleming was remarkably ahead of his time in regarding the lymphoid organs as dynamic structures. He did not picture germinal centres as permanent entities but as elements which arose and disappeared in response to changing demand. Further, he anticipated the discovery of lymphocyte recirculation by suggesting that lymphocytes might enter lymph nodes from the blood stream. His observations and speculations provided an admirable background for today’s session on the origin of germinal centres and on the traffic of lymphocytes.
