Abstract

From a psychological point of view, pregnancy is a “maturational crisis” because it is a critical phase leading to motherhood with all its attendant responsibilities and obligations. The woman is transformed from a state in which she is her own mother’s child to one in which she becomes her child’s mother. This process involves an interval during which she may find that she must confront and resolve any earlier psychic conflicts in her own developmental phases.1 Without such adaptive mechanisms, psychological growth and maturation cannot evolve.
