An Experimental Focused Acoustic Imaging System

Abstract

A high-frequency experimental underwater acoustic imaging system was tested by the Naval Undersea Research and Development Center (NUC) at its Morris Dam Test Facility.

The system consisted of a high-frequency acoustic projector, an acoustic lens, a scanned line array of 100 hydrophones, and a cathode ray tube display. The system exhibited resolutions on the order of 0.3 and 0.4 degrees at ranges up to 29 feet. Results show that useful acoustic images can be obtained by a focused acoustic imaging technique.
