Mechanical Design for Surface Mount Assemblies

Abstract

Designs using surface mount technologies (SMTs) for high-performance products require an integrated approach beginning with the product conception. Both the electrical and the mechanical designs must be compatible if a cost-effective and reliable product is expected. The use of SMTs will result in fewer module or circuit card assemblies (CCAs) with greater electrical functions, which means that both the mechanical and electrical functional partitioning must be decided early in the design process.
