Optical Cross-Talk between Quantum Wells

Abstract

In recent years, the dynamics of excitons in quantum wells (QWs) has attracted much attention especially under resonant excitation. Many time-resolved photolumines-cence experiments have been performed to study the formation and recombination dynamics of QW excitons1–6. However, in all these experiments it has been assumed that the number of QWs does not influence the decay dynamics of the excitonic excitation, i.e., the interaction between excitons located in different QWs mediated by emitted and reabsorbed photons has been neglected. But this interaction may lead to a coupling between spatially separated excitons even though electronic coupling is absent and thus may influence the decay dynamics of excitonic polarizations and densities. Recent theoretical investigations showed that such coupling effects may become important for excitonic decay processes in multiple QW stacks7–9.
