Structure and Function of the Pediatric Peritoneal Membrane
Abstract
In the decade since first edition of this text, the field of PD kinetics has progressed, with the acquisition of additional knowledge and insights, from an obscure science with complex mathematical equations, based upon empirical assumptions and clinical observations, to one which is even more convoluted, with equations that can make the earlier ones seem like elementary arithmetic. Fortunately, the intervening decade had also seen the development of powerful computers which, again based on a mix of empiricism and observation, allow these complicated mathematics to be used clinically. As our understanding of the structure and function of the peritnoeal membrane has expanded, there has not necessarily been a concomittant growth in our understanding of the issues which were relevant to those who provide PD to infants and children. However, many nettlesome issues from the 1980s have been addressed in well-designed studies, with resulting significant changes in the approach to children on PD.
