Abstract

At least 4000 naturally occurring flavonoids have been described; many are common in higher plants (Harborne, 1991). Most of the flavonoid compounds reported in the literature are glycosides of a relatively small number of flavonoid aglycones which often are accumulated in the vacuoles of plant cells. These compounds frequently serve as pigments in plants and are involved in many biological interactions (Harborne, 1991). Flavonoids are based on a C15 skeleton and include a chroman ring bearing an aromatic ring in position 2, 3, or 4 (Hahlbrock, 1981).
