Genetic Approaches to the Investigation of the Mechanisms of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Mobilization into the Blood
Despite an enormous body of knowledge regarding hematopoietic cell growth and differentiation and the regulation of these processes by hematopoietic growth factors, the phenomenon of progenitor cell mobilization remains an enigma. With the expectation that clinical development of blood stem cell transplantation will be greatly benefited by advances in knowledge about the specific processes which underpin mobilization, we have sought to define the limiting steps which regulate blood progenitor cell numbers following in vivo stimulation with G-CSF. This paper reviews the rationale behind the genetic approach we have chosen to take and summarises our recent promising, but preliminary, results.
