The major sources of oils, fats, and other lipids
Abstract
The annual production of oils and fats was 83.7 million tonnes (mt) in the 1991-92 harvest year of which about 23.7 mt (31%) entered into world exports and the remainder was used in the country where it was produced. Three-quarters of the total production is of vegetable origin. Most of this material (around 80%) is used for human food and a further 6% is used for animal feed to produce yet more human food. The remainder (about 14%, equivalent to almost 12 mt) serves as source material for the oleochemical industry. About 90% of this is used in the production of soap and other surface-active compounds and the balance, representing about 1.2 mt, is used for other industrial purposes.
