Abstract
Like all aspects of agriculture and American society, the field seed industry in North America has undergone dramatic changes in the last two hundred years. The twentieth century has especially been marked by unparalleled development, evolution, reconstruction, and progress. As we look forward to the twenty-first century, progress continues at a breathtaking pace which promises to eclipse even that of the past century. This chapter traces some of the changes that have occurred in the production and marketing of seed during the past 250 years which led to the development of the modern seed industry.
