Does Cholesteric Blue Phase III Have an Icosahedral Structure?
Abstract
Recently, attempts have been made to apply the quasicrystal concept to the physics of liquid crystals (Hornreich and Shtrikman, 1986a; Rokhsar and Sethna, 1986; Filev, 1986). Although it is still unclear whether this concept is actually relevant to understanding the puzzling phase found in certain cholesteric liquid crystals, the possibility is intriguing and the combination of liquid crystal and quasicrystal behavior is, in any case, interesting in itself. Our objective here is to introduce the essential elements of quasicrystal structures in liquid crystals. A more detailed exposition may be found elsewhere (Hornreich, 1989).
