Brief Family Therapy with a Low-Socioeconomic Family
Abstract
Historically brief family therapy has been one of the most fertile areas in the development of short-term treatment methodology. The seminal contributions of such theorists and practitioners as Jay Haley (1963, 1976), Salvador Minuchin and associates (1967, 1974), and Paul Watzslawick (1967, 1974) have not only influenced and shaped the principles and strategies of brief family therapy, but they have exerted an important effect on therapeutic practice in general. Other significant influences include the work of Alexander and Parsons (1985), Morawetz and Walker (1984), as well as the many publications emanating from the Milwaukee Brief Family Therapy Center (for example, de Shazer, 1985, 1988; O’Hanlon & Weiner-Davis, 1990).
