Opsono-Phagocytosis of Non-Encapsulated Haemophilus Influenzae
Abstract
Non-encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae causes serious respiratory tract infections in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).1 These bacteria persist despite the presence of abundant numbers of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), complement, and antibodies specific for the infecting organism in the sputum.1,2,3,4 Opsono-phagocytosis, an important immune defense mechanism toeliminate bacterial intruders3, is also operating in the bronchial tree. The basic mechanisms for persistence of H.influenzae in the bronchial tree are unknown, buthost and bacterial factors are likely to contribute1,5,6, one of them might be adisturbed opsono-phagocytosis.
