Nutrition and Physical Activity, Adolescence
Abstract
The adolescent years are a time when attitudes and behaviors associated with a healthy lifestyle can be introduced and established. As an adolescent is still undergoing rapid physiological growth, this may be an ideal period to intervene and correct damage due to prior unhealthy practices, as well as to promote healthy behaviors with the goal of improving health immediately (in adolescence) and into adulthood. In particular, adequate nutrition and regular physical activity have been linked to decreasing an adolescent’s risk of developing chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, cancers, as well as osteoporosis in later life (Sallis, 1993). Similarly, late childhood and the entry into adolescence are important periods in the development of health patterns that may result in either healthy food intake or precursors for eating problems and disorders and obesity.
