Abstract
Most image-guided biopsies are performed under CT or ultrasound guidance. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has advantages over these imaging modalities in terms of lesion localization, multiplanar imaging capabilities, and real-time imaging without the radiation risk of computed tomography. The tradeoffs include limited availability of interventional MRI systems and MRI-compatible needles and devices. In addition, MRI-guided biopsies are currently more expensive. This chapter outlines the basic principles of MRI-guided biopsies.
