The Magellanic Clouds as Late-Type Barred Spirals

Abstract

Between 1954 and 1972, Gérard de Vaucouleurs wrote a series of papers on the Magellanic Clouds which changed the perception of these systems. I will try to describe some of the steps in this process, and then mention some more recent results.
