Abstract
Headache is among the top five conditions for which people seek medical attention. The principle I would like to emphasize is that of rational treatment. That is, it makes far more sense to apply a specific treatment to a specific type of headache (diagnostic entity) than to throw a favorite nostrum indiscriminately at all headaches. I assume the practitioner can distinguish migraine and its variants and treat it with specific antimigraine drugs such as ergots or beta blockers. To prescribe narcotics as a first choice is not only irrational but poor practice.
