Abstract

The International Medals for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics, commonly known as the Fields Medals, do not bear the name or the likeness of J. C. Fields. The head appearing on the medals, which are minted in gold by the Royal Canadian Mint, is that of Archimedes. Though the terms of the endowment do not mention any restriction as to the age of the recipients, the medals have traditionally been awarded to mathematicians under 40 to comply with Fields’ wish that they be an encouragement to further work by the recipients.
