Abstract
After the discovery of x-rays by Roentgen in 1895 and Becquerel’s determination in the same year that rays emitted continuously from uranium ionized the air in their vicinity, there followed the identification of other naturally radioactive elements. These elements were thorium, polonium, radium and actinium. Marie Curie and her husband, Pierre, played an important part in these investigations. It is from these studies in the closing years of the nineteenth century that an interest developed in radioactivity in the environment and its effects upon biological systems.
